Asgar-Dhanji The writer, Asgar Jafferali Dhanji (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) served as the Secretary-General of the Africa Federation for two 3-years terms.  He served as JIBA Vice Chairman – with a particular passion for raising funds and offering microfinance to our Community – for low-income, underprivileged, startups, Business loans, individuals, and small enterprises – thereby giving them opportunities to grow economically.  He is the founder of Imaan Finance Ltd – the First Islamic Finance Institution in Tanzania.  and has also served in Dar es Salaam Jamaat’s Arbitration Committee as well as a Board member of Ebrahim Haji Charitable Hospital – with a particular passion for the project of building the new hospital.  He is now a motivational/Inspirational speaker giving regular Saturday Fajr lectures at Dar Imambara.

W hat’s BI? It’s how you see, feel and think about your physical appearance(shape and size). BI can have a profound effect on your mental and overall well-being.

A healthy BI means you feel comfortable in your skin and are positive about the way you look.
A negative BI leaves you feeling self-conscious, anxious and ashamed.

So, what’s the influence on your physical and mental health?
Positive BI has:
Higher Confidence
Emotional resilience (less stress and mood swings, Healthy habits(eating/exercising), keeping body strong, flexible and energetic.
Better relationships.

Negative BI (feeling unhappy, insecure, ashamed about your body can lead to:
Low self-esteem

Feel unworthy or not good enough,
Comparing and feeling inferior
Constant worry about how you look leads to anxiety/sadness/hopelessness/social withdrawal.
Disordered eating.

How to improve BI & Mental Health:
Practice self-compassion – speak to yourself kindly.
Surround yourself with positivity- mentors, family, who are encouraging, friends, who uplift you.
Avoid media exposure that promotes unrealistic ideals.
Focus on Health- diet/ exercise,
Transform gradually from guilt to goodness, which will come with patience, by at least 1% daily improvement.
