Intellectual Humility – The Gateway to Growth

Growth

e go through so many stages in life, from when we are born to the day we leave this world. Change happens throughout this journey, but the only thing that remains constant is that we are learning every day! Whether you are a baby learning to take your first steps, or a toddler learning new words, a child in school exploring new subjects, or a high schooler diving into deeper waters on different topics. Whether you’re a fresh graduate who is learning ways at work, or newly married, learning how to navigate life together, or a new parent learning how to handle a new life. We are constantly in the phase of learning. It never stops and never should stop! The day you decide that you know enough and want to stop learning, you are already putting your brain to rest when it actually requires vigorous exercise every day to keep you alive.

At all these different stages of life, our learning will look different. Learning is not confined to the classroom or a certificate course. We learn from everyday activities as well, so how are we actually growing? How can we assess ourselves if we have no set parameters like an examination? The answer is as simple as how long does it take you to do it now? The more you do something, the faster you get at it, and that is a great way to assess where you stand and where you need to improve. Another question can be is how efficient you have become? Does the same task still overwhelm you, or does it happen as a breeze?

Another great way of growing is sharing, and this is my main area of discussion today. How many of us feel that we have worked hard and cannot give out information, otherwise someone else will do better in life? Being humble with what you know is the pinnacle of growth. When you realise that your knowledge can benefit someone and you share it out there, you have not reduced anything from what you know, rather, you have opened avenues for people to learn from you. Can you learn from them? One subject matter can be looked at from so many angles due to differences in opinion, understanding, and level of maturity. So, when you decide to give out, maybe that information was essential to someone’s success, which you did not get, but keeping knowledge to yourself due to that fear counts as hoarding and will not benefit you in any way. It is always said that the more you give out, the more you will get. This works with knowledge as well; the more you share, the more you will learn. And the cycle goes on… the more you learn, the more you share. This is the entire meaning of growing intellectually and growing together as one community!
