Marhuma Sabrina Fatema Virji-Alibhai

1995-2011

Sabrina’s Scrabble Tournament (SST) is a tribute to warm-hearted Sabrina Virji-Alibhai, whose soul left her body in a boating accident. She was buried on July 20th, 2011, just a day before her 16th birthday. Allah (s.w.t.) allowed us to raise a kind-hearted soul and He planned to call her at His destined time.

The loss was very difficult to bear for her family and friends. At that time her friends asked many questions about Sabrina’s death. They were devastated. Sabrina’s mother Sajida, reflected on the implications that the loss would have for her friends and calmly decided to smile and tell them all the good things that she could perceive from this loss. She decided to keep Sabrina’s memory alive and do something that would benefit others of her age.

The next year Sajida invited Sabrina’s grieving friends to a birthday party and engaged them with the memory of her playfulness and witty acts! It brought joy to their hearts and they too started sharing her playfulness. They determined that if the mum is at peace with it then they would be too. Since then, they have channelled their love for Sabrina and grief at her loss towards volunteering in her name.

Sabrina’s Scrabble Tournament (SST) takes place annually to raise funds to donate in Sabrina’s name. It is a fun game for ages 9 and onwards. Lunch is provided for participants who pay a minimal fee. There is a bake sale, raffle items, and other things that the team members decide would be useful to collect for charity. Participants have fun competing, regardless of whether they win or not. 

Besides participants, guests are invited to engage in raffles and bake sales. After a short opening speech, many raffle prizes and scrabble results are announced! A video clip of Sabrina Fatema Virji Alibhai 1995-2011

shown from the previous years, of where their donations were channelled and a clip of where the current year’s donation would go. Funds are gathered and donated to different organizations that have been selected for that year.

Sabrina was called to her permanent abode 13 years ago. This is the 12th year since SST began. The good that has come out of it celebrates her life in this world and will Inshallah help her in the other world.
