Personal Development

Courage matters. Being different matters.

Personal development

We spend half our lives charming others. The other half is lost in going through anxieties caused by others. Leave this play, you have played enough. You do not need other people to help you recognise your shortcomings. If you are looking for a flaw, all the mirrors are yours. Eventually, a man’s most valuable trait is a judicious sense of what not to believe.

The question we often ask ourselves is, “Who am I?¨ is not really meant to get an answer; the question ‘Who am I?’ is meant to dissolve the questioner. Adversity is the trial of principle. Without it, a person hardly knows whether there is an honest self within them. Pain means you’re growing. Fear means you’re risking. Tears mean it mattered. Take what hurts you and let it help you. After all, illness is the key doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promises only; pain we obey.

When I think I am, I find myself worthless. When I think I am not, I find my value. It’s the beauty within us that makes it possible for us to recognise the beauty around us. Thus, the question is not what you look at, but what you see. The point is not, and will never be, to stop the grief. That is like stopping the ocean. The point is to find ways to swim.

Instinct guides the animal better than the man. In the animal, it is pure; in man, it is led astray by his reason and intelligence. What distresses me is to see that human genius has limits, and human stupidity none.

If you think we can’t change the world, it just means you’re not one of those who will. Worse still, one will not even begin to change oneself, which is the first step towards making the world a better place. We can either make ourselves miserable or make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.

The starting point is to dare. To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself. You cannot wish for both a strong character and an easy life. The price of each is the other.

Is death the ultimate end, or is a deathly living hell on earth? I ask, ‘Why should I fear death?´ If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not? Live!

Be different; it is ok. For it is better to be unique than the best because being the best makes you number one, but being unique makes you the only one.

Courage matters. Being different matters. Be it! not ours to plunder. It is ours to protect. And in protecting it, we protect our faith, our humanity, and our eternal accountability before Allah.
