1938-2024

A poetic farewell by Mohamed Merali

Indeed the departed has gone to a better place,
Having left a memorable vacuum in his stead,
No one he would ever miss
Local or visitor, MohamedJaffer uncle, you’d never miss.

A knowledgeable man well informed,
Keen to discuss with an open mind,
Cigarette in hand and a ready smile,
In the Baraza, you’d always find.

Cricket was his life and soul,
Avid to watch, guide and often scold,
Players valued his keen opinion,
Long after the game, it’s postmortem on his tongue you’d find.

An enthusiastic traveller keen to see something new,
As a businessman, going with the flow,
Not one to step forward without much thought,
His every step was well calculated and carefully planned.

Marhum Mohamed Jaffer uncle, was full of life,
Active in every sphere of communal work
At times in the forefront, often from the wings,
He would always in every activity be found to take part.

One of the cornerstones of the Nairobi community
Well known the world around,
Even in the field of marthia and maatam
His role was indeed very profound.

Don’t take my word for it, just go and see,
In his grandson, marthia and maatam, you’ll find
In his sons the tact to think through and stride,
Every member of the community, in their hearts, his name you’ll find.

Rest well, uncle, rest well, a dear friend,

In your children and grandchildren will forever you find,

A successful innings, well executed
Rest well, as another as you will never again be found.

May Allah SWT repose the departed soul in the abundance of His mercy and rest him amongst the chosen ones – Aameen. We request our readers to remember marhum and all the Marhumeen with Sura-e-Fateha.
