The Spiritual Journey of Arbaeen – A Path of Reform and Renewal by Mohamedarif Mohamed Suleman

The Arbaeen pilgrimage is a profound expression of faith and devotion in Shi´a Muslim tradition, commemorating the 40th day after Ashura, marking the end of a period of mourning for Imam Hussain (AS), a grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). One of the most poignant aspects of this pilgrimage is the 80km walk from Najaf to Karbala, undertaken by millions of devotees. This journey is more than a physical trek; it represents a spiritual path of reform, renewal, and devotion.

Worship and Inner Peace

So, all the forms of worship which He has prescribed for this precious creation benefit the man himself, which help elevate him to greater heights in the sight of his Lord and Creator. But, man sometimes loses his sight of pursue due to the love of the world, or else, the harshness, injustice and cruelty of the fellow men, and it is then that these sacred months come to his aid as his damaged faith is then rebuilt, his aim to achieve his goal of pleasing his Lord and so attain His blessings here and in the hereafter as well, is reinforced in his inner self. These months help him revive the truth about his Creator and the purpose of his creation, together with his duties towards the Lord, who is most kind and just, desiring only the best for His creation, just as parents desire the best for their children.

If we humans had not been living on this planet, what difference would it have made? Is it necessary for us to know why we have come and why we shall go? If we discover the reason, do we have the ability to acquire this objective? Subsequent to this question, numerous other questions loom, plaguing man’s mind and thoughts

s the moon waxes and wanes, marking the passage of celestial bodies across the vast canvas of the night, so too does the Islamic calendar usher in a new year. The Hijri New Year, particularly for Shi´a Muslims, is not merely a chronological marker; it is a profound spiritual threshold, a moment to pause, reflect, and most importantly, to embark on a journey of profound self-reformation.
